Effective June 1, FedEx hiked fuel surcharges for Ground Shipping for packages 48 inches or more. This surcharge will be $10.50 per package longer than 48 inches.
“We have seen a significant increase in non-traditional items now being purchased online, from mattresses to new swing sets and big-screen TVs just to name a few. “FedEx Executive Vice President Mike Glenn told the audience, according to an earnings call transcript. “We welcome this opportunity, but it is important that we price these items accordingly to account for operational complexity, such as manual sortation and person delivery, et, cetera.”

In many cases, those who have packages delivered to them won’t bear the cost of higher surcharges directly. But retailers who promise customer free shipping on goods will have to pay the new higher fees to live up to those promises. That’s likely to filter down to prices of their products.
It is important to know that this surcharge increase is for packages that are over 48 inches in length on their longest side. If you are shipping small items, this surcharge increase will not affect your shipping costs.
However, if you ship big-screen TVs, mattresses, large furniture, anything longer than 48 inches in length, be prepared to pay an extra $10.50 per package. Or, compare shipping rates at ShipGooder.com to find the cheapest rate, the results may surprise you.
